Exciting changes for the Retrievers' 2017-2018 Season!

August 22, 2017

The 2017-2018 UMBC Retrievers Ice Hockey season is upon us. The Dawgs are excited to take back to the ice, with some big changes. And not just some sweet new sweaters, but they've got those coming too!

The first big change for the upcoming season is the men behind the bench. Brandon Fritz is coming on board to be the new Head Coach for UMBC Ice Hockey. Coach Fritz served as Associate Head Coach last season, after playing 4 seasons with the Dawgs from 2010-2014. Growing up playing hockey in Michigan, Fritz came to UMBC with one of the strongest work ethics of any player, and made three trips to the ACHA National Tournament during his time wearing the black and gold. He plans to bring this grit and work ethic to the Dawgs bench.

Alongside Coach Fritz will be new Assistant Coach, Justin Milo. Coach Milo is new to the Baltimore-area, and was quickly discovered by Coach Fritz. Justin played high school hockey at the elite Shattuck St. Mary's School in Minnesota, which eventually led him to the University of Vermont (NCAA D1) and a trip to the Frozen Four in 2009. After UVM, Coach Milo played a few seasons in the ECHL (Alaska Aces, South Carolina Stingrays, Gwinnett Gladiators).

The 2017-2018 schedule will bring back a lot of old rivalries like College Park, Liberty and Montclair State. The boys kick off the season on September 23 at 4:30pm vs Georgetown University. From there it's 7 of the next 10 games at the Reisterstown Sportsplex, including match-ups against MACH rivals Delaware (Oct 8 at 5:15pm) , Virginia Tech (Oct 21 at 4:30pm) and in-state rival College Park (Oct 15 at 5:15pm). The boys will head west for the first weekend in November, heading to University of Toledo (Nov 3) and then on to midnight madness at the University of Kentucky (Nov 4). The season runs through February, with Senior Night on February 4 versus Stevenson University. From there, hopefully the Retrievers will be on to MACH playoffs and Nationals back in Columbus, Ohio in March.

UMBC Retrievers Ice Hockey is excited for the 2017-2018 season and the changes it will bring. With a solid core group of returning players, along with some extremely talented incoming freshmen, the Dawgs look to continue the traditional of excellence they have established over the decades the team has been in existence. Tryouts-training camp will once again run over Labor Day weekend, starting Friday (Sept 1) at 2pm. All interested players should contact the coaching staff in advance for all necessary information.
