UMBC Earns Hard Fought Split, Atkinson Awarded MACH Player of the Week

November 11, 2016

Coming off their highest scoring win of the season where the Retrievers handily defeated St Joseph's University by a score of 15-2, they welcomed the #4 ranked Toledo University Rockets.

On Saturday, Toledo won by a final score of 7-4. Every time UMBC gained momentum and pulled the game close, the Rockets answered with a goal. The Retrievers had a great start to the game and senior captain Ryan Atkinson got the game's first goal. Toledo answered back with two goals in the first period and took a 2-1 lead into the first intermission. The second period saw a flurry of six goals, Toledo with four and UMBC with two (Atkinson and Johnsson) and Toledo had a 6-3 lead going into the third period. UMBC would pull within two off a goal by senior Jean-Luc Durantaye but Toledo answered back to make it 7-4 which would end up as the final. The Rockets outshot the Retrievers 50-41 for the game.

Sunday would be a different story. UMBC scored two power play markers (Atkinson and Durantaye) on two opportunities in the first period and never looked back. UMBC took a 2-0 lead into the second period. The second period was hard fought and newcomer Colin Edwards found the back of the net half way through the period to give the Retrievers a 3-0 lead. Toledo would get a lucky bounce on the powerplay to get on the board with one minute left in the period. The centering pass from the corner went off a Rocket skate and found its way past Dylan Knox. The Retrievers would take a 3-1 lead into the third period. Toledo would score within the first 5 minutes of the period to pull the game to within one goal. Senior captain Ryan Atkinson extended the lead to 4-2 half way through the period. After a battle along the boards, Edwards found Atkinson in the high slot who put it over the goalie's shoulder. Toledo kept the pressure on the Retrievers but Knox stood tall in net. UMBC called their timeout late in the period after a tired group of players iced the puck. Off the ensuing faceoff with under two minutes remaining, Edwards got sprung on a breakaway and burried the puck five-hole on the Toledo goalie all but securing the victory. Toledo would get a late goal with a minute remaining but UMBC would win the game 5-3.

For his eight point performance on the weekend, senior captain Ryan Atkinson would win MACH Player of the Week. Ryan scored four goals, one of them being the game winning goal on Sunday, and tallied four assists on the weekend. Congratulations Ryan on the well deserved award!
