October 13, 2016

The Louis J. Cantori Club Sport Award is presented annually to a UMBC student who participates in club sports and is an outstanding scholar-athlete.

This year's recipient, Ryan Atkinson, is a senior biochemistry major who is maintaining a 4.00 grade-point average. The presidential scholar conducts research in the Immunology Lab on campus, while competing for the UMBC ice hockey team. The forward has led the Retrievers in scoring in each of his first three seasons. He debuted by earning Mid-Atlantic Hockey Association Rookie of the Year and First Team national tournament honors in 2013-14. Ryan led the National Championship Tournament in points through pool play as he helped lead the Retrievers to the Frozen Four. Last season, the native of Vacaville, California received Second team league honors and he will again serve as team captain in his senior year.

After graduation this spring, he plans to attend medical school by way of the US Air Force Health Profession scholarship.

Congratulations, Ryan!

Dr. Louis Cantori joined UMBC's Department of Political Science in 1972, and served as Chair from 1979 to 1985. He was an internationally recognized expert on Middle East politics and policy and authored, co-authored or edited four books and over 40 articles on the Middle East and other subjects.
